Odds and ends

On Sunday the public car park very close to us turns into a Farmers Market. We have been going to it from the time we came here to study at the Le Cordon Bleu. Quite an interesting place and the produce on offer changes dramatically with the seasons. The Asparagus in spring and early summer is absolutely top class. The glorious tomato in many varieties during summer is something we never get to see in Mumbai. Game during autumn. This Sunday we planned to have a meal at home. We got ourselves delightful bread from the market which the baker told us was baked in a baked bean tin. Very nice dense heavy bread. This accompanied our English Ham, Italian Parma ham, Smoked Salmon [heavy smoke], Shropshire Cheddar, Truffle Brie and the most delightful Vacherin Mont d’Or. Delightful.

On another note, Jamie Oliver has now started several restaurants around Britain. They are generally located in large malls. The largest mall in all Europe is a brand new one called Westfield at Stratford. We decided to have a look at it. It is very large. It was a Monday morning and schools are on half term breaks so the mall was absolutely crawling with people. Children and mothers of all shapes sizes and colour were thronging the mall. The food court which had the fast food outlets all bunched together was bursting at the seams. Jamie’s which is a large two level restaurant in the mall complex is where we decided to eat. They served half portions so that was a relief. HRH the Queen of Kutch ordered a Squid Ink Risotto with Crab while I ordered a Pasta Carbonara. The Polenta chips seemed so attractive that we ordered a bowl of them. The food was really good. This place is recommended.
